The European Union issued two directives which relate to Hazardous substances of which Mercury is one.
Directive 2002/96/EC deals with the safe handling, disposal, recycling and labeling of various hazardous substances.
Directive 2002/95/EC, restricts the use of certain hazardous substance in electrical and electronic equipment (ROhS) and stipulates that effective 7/1/2006 new electrical and electronic equipment put on the European market may not contain lead, mercury, cadmium, chromium, PBB or PBDE.
This directive applies to the following Consumer items:
- Large & small household appliances
- IT & telecommunication
- Lighting equipment
- Electrical and electronic tools
- Toys
- Automatic dispensers
- Household light bulbs
The directive does not apply to industrial or professional equipment, medical equipment systems and monitoring and control systems. It also does not apply to spare parts for repair, or reuse, of electrical and electronic equipment in use before 7/1/2006.
